Recycle Tips
Recycling bins are placed in buildings throughout campus and in the Residence Halls.
The recycling program here on campus offers recycling of materials such as plastic, aluminum, glass, ink and toner cartridges, and batteries. The paper and cardboard recycling is a done by a separate program by Facilities Services. So when recycling make sure that the materials are put into the correct recycle bins. The smaller bins are used for paper recycling and the bigger bins are used for recycling of plastic, and other materials that the on campus recycling program takes care of.
Total Materials Collected
In 2005 there was a total of 7,732 pounds of recyclable material collected. That number nearly quadrupled in 2006 rising to 27,910 pounds. And we finished 2007 with a total of 61,652 pounds which more than doubles the total pounds of 2006. The most the program has come across in a single month has been October of 2007. In October alone the recycle program took in 7,591 pounds. We have seen much improvement in the amount of recyclable material collected since the program began in the Residence Halls. However with an increase in the amount of recycling in the residence halls there has also been an increase in the recycling in department buildings which makes up nearly 50% of the recyclable material the program collects.
The paper recycling is done by the facilities department which picks up the sixty gallon paper bins on a regular schedule. If you have any recycling needs please call (775) 784-8020.

Recycling of the Residence Hall
Recycling in the Residence Halls began in the three main halls, Argenta, Canada, and Nye in the fall semester of 2006. During that semester the program saw considerable change in the amount of recyclable materials collected. The transition from August ’06 to the start of the fall semester in September ’06 saw a 321% increase in recyclable material. For the start of the spring ’07 semester the recycle program then moved into the remainder of the Residence Halls; Manzanita, Juniper, Lincoln, and White Pine.
With the help of ASUN and RHA recycling in the Residence Halls continues to be a success. ASUN provided funding for extra bins that needed to be placed in the Residence Halls due to increased demand. RHA provided funding for the free pizza parties that were awarded in the Spring ’07 semester to the floors that recycled the most. These pizza parties have stopped because they were only used to initially kick off the program.
Nye Hall, White Pine and Juniper are picked up every Monday and Thursday with the exception of holidays, and Argenta Hall, Canada Hall, Manzanita and Lincoln are picked up every Tuesday and Friday with the exception of holidays.

Sponsorship
The on campus recycling program is a non-profit program dedicated to keeping recycling alive and thriving here at the University of Nevada, Reno. The program is currently run through the on campus Environmental Health and Safety Department. The program was previously funded through a grant by the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection. This grant has allowed for recycling bins to be placed in the Residence Halls.
Further funding is provided by the University ASUN, RHA, Chartwells, the Library, and the Academy for the Environment. ASUN provides funds for new bins and other expenses. The Residence Hall Association helped get the program started in the Residence Halls by donating free pizza parties to the floor that recycled the most each month. This happened the first year the program was in the Residence Halls, but has since been discontinued. Chartwells is in charge of the food service areas and helps to provide recycling bins in the food service areas around campus. The Library has provided bins to be allocated for use in the new library. The Academy for the Environment has allocated expenses for new recycle bins that are to be placed throughout campus and in the Residence Halls
History of Recycle Program
The recycling program was established at UNR in 2001 by ASUN and the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection (NDEP). The program was funded by both parties. During the 2004/2005 academic year Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) began to contribute funds to the program along with providing a work area to store the recyclables and a “golf” cart for the pick up of recyclables. In March of 2006 EH&S officially took over the program. The program is now funded by EH&S. In July of 2006 the program received funding from NDEP for one year of operations and wages. With this funding the recycling program began in the three main Residence Halls; Argenta, Canada, and Nye. Recycling in the Residence Halls began in the fall semester of 2006 and expanded to the remainder of the Residence Halls for the Spring semester ’07. Not only did the program expand throughout the Residence Halls, but individual departments saw more recycling. Bins were added throughout campus in department buildings to keep up with the amount of recyclables. The program has expanded throughout the years and is continuing to expand around campus
